It is a pointing device that allows you to move the pointer
by sliding the tip of your finger on its sensitive surface and also allows you
to issue commands with firm pressure (a tap) which is equivalent to double
clicking. This peripheral, standard in notebooks, can be found separately and
is the basis of graphics tablets.
It consists of a
capacitive membrane organized in rows and columns that detects the pressure, or
the subtraction of electric charge by the finger; the latter type is sensitive
to the fact that the user keeps his hand resting on the laptop surface, when
the pointer moves differently from how the finger goes. Because of this, the
touch-pad is normally sensitive to humidity present in the environment.
In addition to the capacitive one, there may be a resistive
touch-pad, where pressing creates a contact between two layers of conducting
electricity. The device detects the contact point by processing the data on the
resistance detected between a vertical and a horizontal side.
This touch-pad can be used with your fingers (even when
wearing gloves), nails, nibs etc. The possibility of using the pen is precluded
in the capacitive type peripheral.
