Anonymous calls: how to find unknown number for free

Whooming allows you to trace the telephone number of an anonymous call for free, but there are other forms of protection.

Behind an anonymous call you can hide a friend who wants to make a joke, the usual call center that offers commercial offers or, in the worst case, a stalker . Knowing the identity of the caller in advance or, at least, the phone number , could avoid many hassles.

Among other things, as you know, making an anonymous call is really simple: from a fixed line it is sufficient to prefix the * 67 #  prefix  with the recipient's telephone number, while, for  anonymous calls from a mobile phone, it is usually necessary to prepend the code  # 31 #  to the number to call.
Not many people know that there are several ways to unmask an anonymous call: through these simple tools, it is possible to identify the caller's number even if dialed anonymously. A very useful way to defend yourself from unwanted calls and, above all, from possible harassers. Let's see how to find out for free who calls from unknown number

How to find anonymous phone calls: Override

A valid service to discover anonymous calls is definitely Override , which you can request from your telephone operator but which, unfortunately, is paid and the costs to be incurred are not exactly minimal. In addition, it requires the existence of a complaint and an authorization from the judge.

This is a tool made available directly by telephone operators that allows you to reveal all the calls made anonymously by showing the real number of the caller on the telephone display . The inconvenience of the service concerns the costs: about thirty euros for fifteen days.
To activate the service, a form must be completed   (attaching a photocopy of the identity card) which can also be requested online, by e-mail or downloaded directly from the telephone operator's website.
In any case, Override allows you to unmask the molester number, but it is not possible to obtain, directly from customer service, the name of the owner of the anonymous user. In order to have this information, however, a specific  complaint filed with the competent authorities (also with oral declaration), the only ones authorized to access the clear records , is required.

Before making the report, you must make sure that the conduct put in place by the alleged offender is a  criminal offense . In fact, accusing a person of an offense that he did not actually commit involves the risk of being exposed to a counter-complaint for  slander .

Outside of the stalking hypotheses  , the crime that occurs most often in these cases, by the importunate telephone operator, is that of  harassment (which will be discussed more extensively later). The typical pattern of harassment is characterized by the  repetition of phone calls  in daytime and nighttime hours, often silent and sometimes with the sole purpose of affecting the tranquility and rest of the targeted person.
It is also necessary that there has been a  plurality of telephone disturbance behaviors  . Therefore, calls made by mistake, prank calls and commercial propaganda calls within the limits of normal tolerance are not punishable. According to the jurisprudence, only two phone calls, moreover silent, are not sufficient to configure the harassment.

How to find anonymous phone calls: Whooming

Luckily, to find anonymous calls there is a free service called Whooming , which can work with any operator, both on mobile and landline. Whooming works through the call forwarding technique: essentially the call is diverted to the Whooming number , which identifies the author. The basic version of Whooming is free but, in this case, the number of those making anonymous calls is shown only twenty-four hours after the call is made. If you want immediate results you have to activate the paid service.

Another of the advantages offered by Whooming is the extreme compatibility: the service, in fact, works not only with smartphones , but also with classic cellphones without internet connection. To use Whooming , in fact, it is not necessary to install any application for the phone:  just configure call forwarding , a possibility offered by any mobile operator.

How to find anonymous phone calls: install Whooming

The installation of Whooming is very simple. First of all you must go to the official website of the service and click on the central button register for free . At this point, you can choose to register by entering an e-mail address or using Facebook credentials . Once this operation has also been completed, Whooming will send a confirmation message of successful registration containing a temporary password . After that, you have to click on the item Go to the site , always contained in the message.

A new page will open; here you need to click on the Login button and fill in the login form by typing the e-mail address chosen initially and the password that was sent by e-mail.
After registering, you are ready for the most important step: providing Whooming with your telephone number. To do this, simply select the + Add number button and then Continue .

How to discover anonymous phone calls: how Whooming works

Call forwarding must now be set up . The procedure should not impress: what has been illustrated so far is nothing more than an ordinary registration on any site.

Once the whole registration procedure has been completed, the service shows how to enable call forwarding on the indicated telephone number so that calls made with the anonymous name are automatically rejected and directed to the Whooming number . The options available are basically two:
to enable call forwarding on busy , check the box next to call forwarding on busy and dial a code that varies from operator to operator. For example, for Tim, Vodafone and Wind the number is ** 67 * 0694802015 #; for Tre it is ** 67 * 0694802015 * 11 #. By choosing this mode, you can discover the anonymous number only by refusing the call;
to enable call forwarding on all calls (practically the mobile phone will no longer ring), check the box located next to the item total call forwarding , dial ** 21 * 0694802015 # and start a call. Next, you need to click on the continue button .
After the procedure, Whooming asks to check that the service is actually working. Basically, if the choice fell on call forwarding only if the phone is busy, you have to dial your own number (i.e., call yourself), while, if total call forwarding has been activated, you have to call on your own number from other users. Whooming will communicate the correct activation of the service.
From now on, every time you receive a call from a private or unknown number, all you have to do is refuse the call; after about twenty-four hours, Whooming will send a message to the e-mail address indicated during the registration phase, indicating the number of those who called anonymously. On the other hand, the complete call diversion does not entail the need to reject the call, as the latter will be automatically blocked.

The paid service also allows you to benefit from further advantages, such as: the possibility of making the sound of the free line heard by the senders of anonymous calls when in reality Whooming has already tracked the number; the recording of conversations intercepted by Whooming with the attached possibility of downloading them to the computer; SMS notifications, to receive a message with the number of the caller. These latter functions can be particularly useful in cases where the conduct of the anonymous person may integrate the extremes of a crime.

Whooming is also available as an app for Android smartphones and for iPhones through which you can check the history of calls received and manage your account from a mobile phone.
How to find anonymous phone calls: disable Whooming
Whooming can be turned off at any time by typing ## 002 # on the phone's numeric keypad and then starting a phone call. After dialing and calling the code indicated above, a message will appear warning that the service has been deactivated.

It is good to remember that Whooming is not foolproof: a very skilled person could still manage to get around this service using some more sophisticated techniques than simply obscuring the caller's phone number.
How to find out calls from private numbers: TrueCaller

A problem very similar to that of anonymous calls concerns calls from a private number , that is, those of commercial operators. A viable solution is provided by TrueCaller : this is an app free that allows you to identify (and possibly blocking) calls from call centers and more or less authorized traders. The service also allows you to search for mobile numbers and landline numbers and easily trace their owners.

The drawback of TrueCaller is the obligation to  share your mobile phone number with other users: this means that the number becomes public and easily traceable. The application is available for both  Android  and  iOS  and  Windows Phone . Installation is simple and intuitive: after downloading it to your smartphone , you need to start it and follow the guided procedure for creating your account . You must then enter your mobile number in the appropriate field, wait for the number to be verified with an automatic call by TrueCaller  and fill in the form that is proposed.TrueCaller can identify unwanted calls but not automatically reject them.

How to find out calls from private numbers: Should I answer?

Should I Answer?  is another valid (free) tool for Android , very similar to TrueCaller. The device, in fact, blocks the calls that come from commercial operators present in a database that is enriched every day thanks to user reports. The advantage of Should I Answer? It is that it does not need to share your phone number: privacy is therefore saved. This app is also freely downloadable.
